Default Mark of Pain nuking outside of FoWSC.

Mark of Pain.

Quote:
For 30 seconds, whenever target foe takes physical damage, Mark of Pain deals 10...34 shadow damage to adjacent foes.
We all know the build:

http://pvx.wikia.com/wiki/Build:N/A_Mark_of_Pain_Nuker

In my experiences in Guild Wars, this is one of the best DPS builds when it is used properly. Having said this; I barely see any MoP necromancers about when doing daily ZQs or pugging other activites.

It's a shame, I know that SS is still the preffered build for most Necromancers who play this game, but I think that a good MoP can easily outdamage a good SS Necromancer.

I guess I just wanted to open this up for discussion:
  • How do you rate MoP vs SS?
  • Any ideas on why the number of MoP Necromancers about are low? (Outside of FoWSC)
Feel free to comment on either of my questions, or anything you believe to be relevant to the topic.

-Ben.

1. MoP is better imo.
2. The required physical input outside SCers isn't always available if you don't want to bring physical henchmen, so if that's the case, you might be better off with SS since you'll have MoP in there anyway, even though it won't be the core of the build.

Also, the guy above me is an idiot.

MoP is a circumstantial skill, and you cannot count on any random pug to make it reach it's full effectiveness.

While MoP does have the potential to do a lot more damage than SS, it requires a much more specialized and coordinated team. When running SS, it gives the rest of your team the freedom to run whatever they want, instead of a strictly a physical team. MoP also doesn't work properly if the enemies aren't in a tight ball, so a party slot is taken up specifically for the purpose of tanking, which in many PvE teams, isn't needed.

Basically, MoP can do more damage, but only in the right situation, making it not so great for general PvE.

You just need to hope that your physicals, however many you have, know how to T-Space your calls and not call themselves and c-space. You only need 2~ Physicals(not including 100b wars) to get enough damage out of MoP to make SS seem gutless; and I'm pretty sure most teams pull that off 90% of the time.

I dislike Spiteful Spirit more than any other skill in PvE.

All you need is PS and SoA to get a ball going and its not like it has to be a huge ball in order to spike them down anyway.

You don't need a specialised team... You're still thinking FoWSC. One physical and a necro. That's all you need.

I usually run a 12+1+3 DM 9 Curse 9+1 Soulreap necro, with either AOTL, Fleshgolem or Discord if I'm running discord heroes, I usually take mark of pain with me, because the minions do physical damage, my modified discord team build with 1 player & 3 Necro heroes, allows me to have 9 minions each, so 4x9 = 36 minions in total. Mark Of Pain at 9 curses does 28 damage, 28x36 = a stunning output of 1008 AoE damage, on each target.
Minions often spread out their damage tho, thats why I have one of my necro's spam MoP with me, running at 12+1 curses, so there will always be 2 monsters hexed with MoP.

In my opinion, Mark of pain is a minion masters best friend.

I play MoP as my main with a 100b friend alot.

Him + a spear on myself; and spears on 2/3 other heroes.

I know that MoP does require a little more co-ordination; but as Minion just said: 1 Physical is enough.
Essentially it's just T-Space instead of C-Space.

So why not take both SS and MoP? that's what the teambuilds for Frostmaw's SC MoP require anyway.

He's talking about General PvE play. Balanced play.

There is no point in taking SS when you can deal more damage with MoP if you take AP to recharge it. Taking SS or any other elite would limit severely the effectiveness off MoP, due it's 20s recharge.

A good MoP Necromancer can still deal huge damage with a team who plays with 'spread agro' i.e No Perma/Tanks.

As stated before you still have that freedom; just stick spears on heroes.

Well that, and the ability to ball up your enemies. It would seem that many pugs have forgotten how to do this, or never learned. (Excuse me for a moment while I go slap a glaiver upside the head in DoA).

SS gets better the less coordinated your party is because it will take longer to kill an idividual foe and therefor SS is longer active; MoP on the other hand gets better the more coordinated your party is.
That's why I use mostly SS when I play with H/H or PUGs that don't seem to be extraordinary competent and mostly MoP when I play with people I know.

Gonna vote for SS here for general use...
MoP has potential with a physical group, but my playstyle is more casters and usually little to no melee. I'm usually not a fan of melee, and GW in particular I've never liked most of the physical damage options.
Given most PuGs I jump into are mainly casters (2 physicals at best, never more), I'd suggest that may be a reason you don't see more MoP necros in pugs.

I daren't say it's the best, but MoP is certainly one of the best skills at clearing mobs when used properly. From personal experience, it is indeed very effective to get one bone fiend MM and one MoP spammer in PvE as bone fiends attack from a range and deal physical damage. There is also not much risk of the MoPed monster of dying from bone fiends before the adjacent monsters die. I've found this method much faster at clearing mobs than using the classic arcane echo SoS.
